Have a 1990 Ford e350 with a 7.3L IDI Diesel and an E40D tranny.
On highway after doing 50-65MPH for 20-30 minutes all of the sudden RPMs will go totally erratic. Revving super high and then low, all over the place. No power is observed when revs are high, in fact i wont even have any pressure on the accelerator pedal. This erratic behavior doesn’t stop until the vehicle’s engine is turned off. Then when we go to drive again it again, it’s like it never happened and drives smoothly. This has happened now 4 times and then last night after driving around for 30-40 minutes around town it happened doing 25MPH.
Originally thought it had something to do with overdrive or 4th gear but the fact it just happened at 25MPH leads me to believe otherwise. Perhaps instead it is related to vehicle reaching operating temp.
I had also put in a faucet fuel pump and started using my second fuel tank (which hadn’t been used in years). May have not drained the tank well enough because i noticed gunk/ sediment collecting into the filter i installed.
Hooked up to a ODB1 scanner and it threw code 63 “throttle position signal/ fuel injection pump lever.”
Would it make sense to replace the throttle position sensor?? Or is this fuel injectors?? Or injection pump? Or possibly a temperature sensor?
Any suggestions or knowledge would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! I have now been dealing with this for over a week. Thank you
