2004 2500HD Starting Problem

5452 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  TPDiesel
Started having starting issues with WIX diesel fuel filters when they changed the filter body to plastic. After two weeks on a new filter and hard starts, or no start at all, changed to a Delco fuel filter. My truck will start good on the first start, but after a 10 min drive and the truck is shut down the second start drags out for approx 5-7 seconds, but will start. I can hear a slight fluctuation of engine RPM when at idle.

Automatic transmission?
Hmm... Filters causing some issues? And it is taking a bit longer to start. GM would say that it is normal. Me personally I would continue to investigate the issue. Like for example I had a throwout bearing issue on my Ford. I have a Manual Transmission. It caused me some problems with the starter. Throughout my entire vacation in 2009, I swore up and down It was the starter going bad. Turns out it was my throw out bearing. At least I made it home, so that I could properly figure it out. Not saying this is your issue. But something tells me that there are more issues then just filters. But I'm no Dmax guy. I'm hoping one from this forum does show up with an answer. other then that if it is a filter issue, ditch it for an XX-Fuel filtration system
I would look into your filter head assembly loosing prime. I have some rebuild kits available.

And there you go! Something simple! Thanks Steve!:3-startled:
Just to update an issue with WIX filters has cause other diesel truck to show fuel problems, injector issues among others and turns out that it was the filter. Wix has a good efficient filter that stops up very quickly.
I am sending Steve, True Performance asking if he has any suggestions. I will have this issue resolved in the next two week.
Interested in the rebuild kit and dual filtration.
Quick update. No word From Steve.
My truck would not start with the Two week old WIX filter. Now it does start better with another type of filter. With 205,000 miles is it time to replace everything in the fuel system??

Do you have to take the transmission out to install 4 in exhaust system?

Sorry for the delay I was at the Redding Diesel Nationals for the last two days.
I'm running XX-Fuel Dual Filter kit on mine with a stock plastic wix filter for 15k. No issues yet.

No, removing the cat was tight fit between the frame and tranny. I loosened the transmission cross brace to give me a little more room.
