Question Where is my money best spent ?

I just purchased a 2004 {mfg. date 03-04}Ram 2500, 2 WD, auto, 5.9, turbo, 24 valve truck.
It appears to be stock with exception to a Banks intake manifold, and heater delete plate. Also has a EGT probe that the gauge is missing, but the probe is still in the exhaust manifold. So I think it had some sort of programmer installed by the last owner. Truck runs and performs perfect as is, BUT like everyone, I want to make it fit me particular needs. I don't want to hot rod it all the time. I want to stay within any safety specs as far as performance goes. That is I don't want to run it to the very edge of breakage.
I think I have learned from reading on this forum that the 1st FREE power I can get is by replacing the air filter box with a free flowing design, and although it already has 4.0" exhaust from the turbo back I read that eliminating the cat, as well as muffler keeping the pipes at 4.0" will make a world of difference. In addition to if that's not enough for my particular needs and a programmer is needed {probably will} these items would need be installed/removed anyway. I like the idea of the programmers that offer the safety measure of staying within the limitations of the engine and trans, so I can honestly see one in the future. But which one is recommended by you guys ? BUT I want to get any torque and power I can the cheapest/safest way possible to start with. My main usage will be short street trips, but mainly towing a 3000 lb. race car and trailer. To be able to push a button on a programmer for towing, economy, or performance just sounds too good to me...lol What do you real deal guys have to offer me ? I'd like to hear from folks that have hands on experience opposed to a salesman. At his point I do believe this engine is the 325 HP 600 torque variation, but will confirm in the next few days
