Default Ram 2500 VOLT gauge issue

Bought this truck in Sept. of 2015. During the test drive all gauges worked perfect.
One week after the purchase I noticed occasionally the VOLT guage upon start up {only} would stay down about 12v, then 1/2 mile or so later it would come up to 14V and stay there. Never a dead battery, slow crank, no dim lights, always starts fine, etc. I just couldn't make time to look it over before now. Well this morning for the 1st time the red CHECK GAUGES light came on and I noticed the VOLT reading was below 8. Just like the key was completely off. Once it is in that position it stays there, until you turn the key off and restart the engine, then it starts out at 11-12. I have since chkd. charging at the batterys and its only 11-12ish. {battery voltage}
My guess is that its probably the alt. BUT why does the guage go below 8 volt and stay there, when the batterys have 11 + volts ? I don't want to pay all the money for a new alt. and that's not the problem. Not to mention being outside in the winter elements changing it. I have heard there are certain modules that could be the problem. The local dealership is absolutely no help what so ever. Other than bring it to them for a hefty bill. Has anyone ever expierenced this type of thing ?
Thanks in advance !!!!
